Every October we have a Cancer Awareness Benefit night with Chatfield. At this game, we raise awareness and money for a cancer organization that's near and dear to us, typically to raise awareness for a cancer that has affected a member of our volleyball family. The last time we hosted it, in 2019, it was Dig Teal for Ovarian Cancer for a Chatfield player's mom who passed away from Ovarian Cancer. Of course we all know what happened last year #COVID, so we were not able to have the event.
This year, our theme will be Think Zebra for Neuroendocrine Cancer Awareness (NCAN). Our Dakota Ridge players wanted to honor the mom of TWO of our former players, Berkley, who is a Senior this year, and her older sister Quincy who graduated in 2020. Their mom Judy was diagnosed in 2019 and passed away from this disease in 2020. Neuroendocrine cancer is an extremely rare disease that is often confused with common illnesses, so our goal is to help their family and NCAN raise money and awareness about this disease so it can be caught early and more lives can be saved. As this is an extremely rare cancer, the ribbon color is Zebra, because as they say “When you hear hoofbeats, it could be a horse, but sometimes it’s a ZEBRA”.
This is a HUGE event for our two schools. We sell tee shirts, host a silent auction and raffle, and might even have some games for the spectators to get involved ON THE COURT! 100% of the proceeds will be donated to the Neuroendocrine Cancer Awareness Network. We are even honored to welcome the founder of NCAN and a TWENTY YEAR survivor Maryann Wahmann who will speak at our event. Along with Berkley and her family, we've designed tee shirts in Judy's honor, and will be pre-selling them online from now until October 3rd. Please consider purchasing a tee and wearing it at our Think Zebra game on Tuesday October 19th. Our goal is to fill up the gym with these black and white shirts and display our support for Berkley and her family AND raise money and awareness for NCAN. Orders for tee shirts will be accepted until October 3rd, and will be shipped in time for you to wear at the game. Make sure to order yours now so you get the size and color you want. Limited sizes and colors of shirts will be sold at the door (cash only). WE NEED YOUR HELP!
But we can't do it without your help.
